How to Avoid Packers and Movers Fraud (Common Scams + Red Flags)

The Indian packers/movers industry has a fraud problem. Consumer forums see hundreds of complaints every month — hostage cargo, bait-and-switch pricing, fake reviews. Here are the 7 most common scams and how to spot them before you pay.

The 7 most common scams

1. Hostage cargo

Truck arrives at destination, but the driver demands ₹5,000-50,000 "extra" before unloading. Refuse, and your goods sit on the truck until you pay.

How to avoid: Pay 25-30% advance only. Final payment ON delivery, AFTER unloading is complete. Get this in writing.

2. Bait-and-switch quote

You're quoted ₹15,000. On the day, the bill becomes ₹35,000 — "extra labour", "extra packing material", "stairs charge".

How to avoid: Get a written, itemised quote. Insist on a "all-inclusive" line that says no further charges.

3. Fake registration claims

"Yes sir, fully GST registered" — but no GSTIN on the bill, no documentation.

How to avoid: Ask for the GSTIN. Verify on gst.gov.in (takes 30 seconds). No GSTIN = walk away.

4. Sub-contracted disaster

You hire Brand X. On move day, a different truck shows up — Brand X subcontracted to a small operator. If something breaks, neither party takes responsibility.

How to avoid: Ask explicitly: "Will your own crew handle this, or do you subcontract?" Get the answer in writing.

5. Insurance illusion

"Don't worry sir, fully insured." But there's no policy document, no claim process.

How to avoid: Ask to see the actual transit insurance policy with your goods listed. If they can't produce it, they're not insured.

6. Ghost reviewers

The Google listing has 50 5-star reviews — all from accounts with no profile photo, all posted within 2 weeks.

How to avoid: Read reviews from 6+ months ago. Check reviewer profiles for genuine activity.

7. The vanishing damage

Items arrive broken. You file a claim. Then... silence. Phone unanswered. Office closed.

How to avoid: Document damage AT delivery (photos, video). Write it on the delivery sheet BEFORE signing. File written claim within 24 hours.

What to do if you've been scammed

  1. File a complaint at consumerhelpline.gov.in
  2. File FIR at local police station for cargo theft
  3. Post an honest review on Google with photos
  4. If GST evasion: complain to GST commissioner

Reputable companies make mistakes too — but they fix them. Cheats just disappear.
